About the work

A haunting surrealist composition fills the canvas with a skull nestled among dark twisted branches, a swarm of falling bombs, and a child's face emerging from the earth below, with the word 'IRAQ' glowing in gold. The fiery orange and teal sky amplifies the painting's urgent anti-war symbolism, while a lone butterfly near the base offers a fragile note of hope amid devastation.

Mixed media

Works combining two or more materials — paint, collage, found objects, text, sand — in a single piece. The approach lets artists layer meaning and material, and is widely used in modern and contemporary MENA art.

Surrealism

Art of the dream and the unconscious, juxtaposing unexpected images to unsettle reason and reveal the irrational. Several Arab modernists embraced its imaginative freedom and symbolism.
