Muhanna Al Durra (1938–2021) is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in modern Jordanian art. Born in Amman, Al Durra is credited with introducing Cubism and abstract art to Jordan, significantly shaping the country’s visual arts movement. He worked primarily in painting, exploring a range of mediums including oil and watercolor, and his style evolved from figurative compositions to more abstract and geometric forms. Al Durra’s works often reflect his deep engagement with Arab heritage, incorporating traditional motifs and themes into a modernist framework.

Throughout his career, Al Durra exhibited extensively at major institutions. His works have been showcased at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts and featured in regional and international exhibitions, underlining his influence in the Arab art world. Al Durra also played a crucial role in arts education, serving as the director of the Department of Art and Antiquities in Jordan and founding the Jordan Institute of Fine Arts. His paintings have appeared at reputable auction houses, including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where they have attracted significant attention from collectors of Middle Eastern art.
