Muayed Neama

Iraq, b. 1951–2005

Muayed Neama (1951–2005) was an influential Iraqi artist recognized for his contributions to modern and contemporary art in Iraq. Born in Baghdad, Neama developed a distinctive style that blended traditional Iraqi motifs with modernist sensibilities, working primarily in painting and drawing. His works often reflect the cultural and social complexities of Iraq, rendered through expressive brushwork and a nuanced color palette. Neama was part of a generation of artists who sought to bridge Iraq’s rich artistic heritage with contemporary forms, making his work resonate both locally and internationally.

Throughout his career, Muayed Neama exhibited in several significant institutional venues, including the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad, where his works are held in the permanent collection. He participated in numerous group exhibitions that highlighted the evolution of Iraqi art during the late 20th century. Neama’s art has also appeared at major auction houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, where his paintings have attracted attention from collectors interested in Middle Eastern modernism. His legacy endures as a testament to the resilience and creativity of Iraqi artists during periods of profound change.
