About the work

Dynamic overlapping forms surge across the composition in sweeping greys, bursts of yellow, and slashes of red, conveying a vivid sense of tension and movement. The fluid watercolor washes dissolve into one another, lending the work a raw, gestural energy characteristic of expressive abstraction.

Mounir canaan

Egypt, b. 1919–1999

Mounir Canaan (منير كنعان, sometimes transliterated as Mounir Kanaan or Mounir Kana’an) was a pioneering Egyptian artist born in 1919 and active until his death in 1999. Renowned for his innovative approach to abstraction, Canaan played a significant role in the development of modern art in Egypt. His work spanned painting and mixed media, often characterized by bold compositions and a dynamic interplay of color and form. Canaan was a founding member of the Contemporary Art Group (جماعة الفن المعاصر) in Cairo, which sought to bridge Egyptian heritage with modernist experimentation.

Canaan’s art has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art in Cairo, which holds several of his works in its permanent collection. He represented Egypt in international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, further cementing his reputation as a key figure in the Arab art scene. His works have also appeared at auction with leading houses; Sotheby’s and Christie’s have featured his paintings in their Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern art sales, where they have achieved notable results, reflecting sustained collector interest.

Throughout his career, Mounir Canaan remained committed to exploring new artistic languages while drawing inspiration from Egypt’s rich visual traditions. His legacy endures as a touchstone for subsequent generations of Egyptian and Arab artists, and his contributions continue to be recognized in both institutional retrospectives and the secondary art market.
