Mostafa Husain

Egypt, b. 1935–2014

Mustafa Hussein (1935–2014) was a prominent Egyptian cartoonist and artist, renowned for his incisive political and social caricatures. Graduating from Cairo University's Faculty of Fine Arts in 1959, he began his journalistic career in 1952 at Dar Al-Hilal, contributing to the design of "Al-Ithnayn" magazine's cover. In 1956, he joined the newspaper "Al-Masaa" as a cartoonist, remaining there until 1963. From 1974 until his passing, Hussein was a daily cartoonist for "Akhbar Al-Youm," where his work became a staple of Egyptian media.

Hussein's collaboration with writer Ahmed Ragab produced some of Egypt's most iconic satirical characters, including "Falah Kafr El-Hanadwa," "Abduh Mashtaq," and "Aziz Bek El-Aleet." These creations not only resonated with readers but also inspired television adaptations, such as the series "Cat and Mouse" and "Nas wa Nas." His influence extended beyond print, with his works exhibited internationally, including in France and Russia. Hussein also contributed to children's literature and designed the poster for the 26th Alexandria International Film Festival.

Throughout his career, Hussein received numerous accolades, including the State Incentive Award in 1976, the Order of Distinction, First Class in 1985, and the State Merit Award in 2003. In 2010, he was honored with the Nile Award for Arts. His legacy endures as a testament to the power of art in reflecting and shaping societal discourse.
