Monir Islam

Bangladesh

Monirul Islam, commonly known as Monir Islam, is a prominent Bangladeshi artist born in 1943 in Chandpur, Bangladesh. Renowned for his innovative approach to printmaking, particularly etching, Monir Islam has developed a distinctive style characterized by delicate lines, abstract forms, and a subtle interplay of light and shadow. His works often blend elements of his Bangladeshi heritage with influences from his long residence in Spain, resulting in a unique synthesis of Eastern and Western artistic traditions.

Monir Islam’s career includes significant institutional recognition, with solo and group exhibitions at major museums and galleries such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts in Dhaka. He is a founding member of the influential Grupo Quince, a collective of printmakers in Spain, and his contributions to the arts have been acknowledged with prestigious awards, including the Spanish Cross of Officer of the Order of Queen Isabella and the Ekushey Padak from the Government of Bangladesh. His works have appeared at reputable auction houses, including Christie’s and Bonhams, where his prints and paintings have attracted international collectors, further cementing his reputation in the global art market. Monir Islam continues to live and work between Spain and Bangladesh, maintaining an active presence in both countries’ art scenes.
