Mongi Maatoug

Tunisia

Mongi Maatoug, born in 1953, is a prominent Tunisian painter and sculptor. He serves as a professor at the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts de Tunis. Since 1990, Maatoug has been an active participant in the Union des Artistes Plasticiens, holding the position of president from 2006 to 2012. His contributions to the arts have been recognized with the Grand Prix de la Ville de Tunis in 2005 and the National Prize for Visual Arts in 2006.

Maatoug's artistic practice encompasses both painting and sculpture, characterized by a deep engagement with abstraction. His works have been showcased in five solo exhibitions at Galerie Kalysté between 1996 and 2013. In 2016, his abstract paintings were featured in the collective exhibition "Tajrid" at the Musée de la Ville de Tunis. In 2020, the exhibition "COVIDAR’T" at Galerie Saladin in Sidi Bou Said paid homage to Maatoug, highlighting his influence on contemporary Tunisian art.

Maatoug's work is inspired by his observations, auditory experiences, and emotions, which he translates onto canvas to convey the emotional charge that animates him. His dedication to the arts and his role in shaping the Tunisian art scene have solidified his status as a leading figure in the country's visual arts landscape.
