Mohi khalifa

Iraq

Mohi Khalifa (1956–2024) was a distinguished Iraqi artist known for his expressive realism and deep engagement with local themes. Born in Baghdad, he developed an early passion for art, leading him to pursue formal education at the Institute of Fine Arts, where he earned a diploma in 1979, and later at the College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1983. Under the mentorship of renowned artist Faiq Hassan, Khalifa honed his skills in classical drawing and painting techniques.

Throughout his career, Khalifa's work was characterized by a focus on Iraqi folklore, daily life, and the rich traditions of Baghdad. His paintings often depicted local neighborhoods, nature, and human expressions, reflecting a deep connection to his cultural roots. He was particularly inspired by Arabian horses, a motif that became a signature element in his art. In addition to painting, Khalifa contributed significantly to children's literature, illustrating over fifty covers for children's stories and numerous other illustrations since 1976. His versatility extended to sculpture, with notable works including a statue in Kadhimiya and a mural on a hotel facade.

Khalifa's commitment to art was unwavering, producing daily sketches and paintings that captured the essence of Iraqi life. His dedication was recognized through various awards, including the Gilgamesh Epic Award in Iraqi sculpture. In 1994 and 1998, two of his paintings were sold at auctions held by Iraqi expatriates in Germany, with proceeds donated to purchase medicine for children during the sanctions imposed on Iraq. His works are also part of the collection at the Baghdadi Museum, standing alongside those of Iraq's realist art pioneers. Khalifa passed away on December 2, 2024, after a battle with a chronic illness, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and resonate within the art community.
