Mohammed Mourabiti

Morocco, b. 1969

Mohammed Mourabiti (محمد المرابطي), born in 1969 in Morocco, is a contemporary artist recognized for his vibrant paintings and mixed-media works that often explore themes of memory, architecture, and Moroccan identity. Mourabiti’s practice is deeply rooted in the visual language of his homeland, drawing inspiration from traditional Moroccan motifs, urban landscapes, and the interplay of color and form. His works are characterized by their abstract compositions and textured surfaces, reflecting a dialogue between heritage and modernity.

Mourabiti has exhibited extensively in Morocco and internationally, with notable institutional exhibitions including shows at the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions highlighting contemporary North African art. In addition to his artistic practice, Mourabiti is known for his role in fostering the Moroccan art scene, notably through the founding of the Al Maqam artist residency near Marrakech, which has become a significant hub for artists in the region.

At auction, Mourabiti’s paintings have appeared at major houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where they have attracted collectors interested in contemporary Maghrebi art. His contributions have positioned him as a prominent figure in Moroccan contemporary art, bridging local traditions with global artistic dialogues.
