Mohammed Khalil

Palestine

Mohamed Saleh Khalil, born in 1960 in Al-Zarqa, Jordan, is a Palestinian artist whose parents hailed from Al-Walaja, near Bethlehem. Raised in Damascus, he pursued his passion for art by obtaining a Master's degree in painting, etching, engraving, and printing techniques from the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, Germany, in 1988. His artistic style is deeply influenced by German Expressionism, characterized by bold brush strokes and a vivid color palette that conveys profound emotional depth.

After completing his studies, Khalil returned to Damascus, where he held his first solo exhibition at the Naji Al-Ali Art Gallery. He then moved to Nicosia, Cyprus, participating in numerous group exhibitions and further refining his artistic voice. In 1994, Khalil made a significant return to Palestine, settling in Ramallah. There, he established his studio and founded the Young Artists Forum, dedicated to nurturing the talents of young Palestinian artists. His commitment to the arts extended to his role as the head of the Fine Arts Program at the Palestinian Ministry of Culture.

Khalil's work has been showcased in various prestigious venues, including the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah and the Al-Ma'mal Foundation for Contemporary Art in Jerusalem. In 2024, the Palestinian Museum hosted his solo exhibition titled "Live Broadcast," which poignantly addressed the ongoing struggles in Gaza. Throughout his career, Khalil has received notable accolades, such as the Jury Prize at the 2000 Biennale of Alexandria and the Hans Grundig Prize for Art in Germany in 1988. Currently, he serves as a lecturer at Birzeit University's Faculty of Art, Music, and Design, continuing to inspire and mentor the next generation of Palestinian artists.
