Mohammad Salem

Egypt, b. 1940

Mohamed Salem (1940–2022) was an Egyptian artist renowned for his contributions to mural painting and stained glass art. Born in Sohag, he graduated from the Painting Department at Alexandria University's Faculty of Fine Arts in 1964. He later earned a Ph.D. in Fine Arts in 1982, specializing in mural painting. Salem's early career was marked by a dedication to abstract forms, seeking to engage viewers through innovative visual language. In the mid-1970s, Salem pursued studies in mural painting, and by the 1980s, he had shifted his focus to stained glass and mosaic art. He studied mosaic techniques in Ravenna, Italy, a city renowned for its Byzantine mosaics. Salem's work often depicted Egypt's natural landscapes and urban scenes through abstract compositions, emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow. His commitment to integrating art into public spaces led him to create several notable murals, including the one at Zewail Square in Alexandria. Throughout his career, Salem held numerous solo exhibitions, starting with his first in 1970 at the Alexandria Atelier. He represented Egypt in various international art events, such as the International Festival of Painting in France (1981) and the 16th Alexandria Biennale (1987). As a dedicated educator, he taught at Alexandria University's Faculty of Fine Arts and played a pivotal role in establishing the Mural Painting Division there. His influence extended beyond his artworks, as he mentored many students, instilling in them a profound appreciation for art's role in society.
