Mohammad Omar Khalil (محمد عمر خليل), born in 1936 in Burri, Khartoum, Sudan, is a prominent painter and master printmaker whose career spans over six decades. Khalil is recognized for his innovative approach to printmaking, blending traditional Sudanese motifs with global art movements, and for his experimentation across media including painting, etching, and collage. His work often explores themes of memory, migration, and cultural hybridity, reflecting his experiences living and working between Sudan, Italy, and the United States.

Khalil studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy, before relocating to New York in the late 1960s, where he became a significant figure in the international printmaking scene. His works have been exhibited in major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, as well as the Sharjah Art Foundation and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha. Khalil has also participated in the Cairo Biennale and the Sharjah Biennial, further cementing his reputation in the Arab and international art worlds.

At auction, Mohammad Omar Khalil’s works have appeared at leading houses including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where his prints and paintings have attracted collectors interested in modern Arab and African art. His enduring influence is evident in both his artistic output and his role as a mentor to younger generations of artists from Sudan and the broader region.
