Mohammad Omar Alzarafani

Egypt

Mohammad Omar Alzarafani is an Egyptian artist known for his contributions to various art forms, including painting, sculpture, and printmaking. He founded the "Phoenix Group," symbolizing the mythical bird that, while nonexistent, soars through all existence. Alzarafani's work is characterized by a blend of traditional Egyptian themes with contemporary techniques, reflecting a deep connection to his cultural heritage.

Throughout his career, Alzarafani has received numerous accolades. Notably, he secured the first prize in painting at the Luxor Drawing Institute in 1953 and the Cairo Salon in 1969. Internationally, he was awarded first prizes in sculpture at the 6th and 7th Alexandria Biennales in 1965 and 1968, respectively. His works are part of esteemed collections, including the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art in Cairo, the Museum of Modern Art in Venice, and the Louvre's National Library in Paris.

Alzarafani's artistic endeavors extend beyond traditional mediums. He has designed significant pieces such as a composite glass portrait of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late President of the United Arab Emirates, and the set designs for the film "Amasha in the Jungle." His multifaceted contributions have solidified his reputation as a pivotal figure in the Egyptian art scene.
