Mohammad Muhraddin

Iraq, b. 1938–2015

Mohammad Muhraddin (محمد مهر الدين), born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1938 and passing in 2015, was a prominent figure in modern Iraqi art. Renowned for his innovative approach to abstraction, Muhraddin worked primarily in painting, exploring the interplay of color, form, and texture. His style is often associated with the Baghdad Modern Art Group, which sought to blend Iraqi heritage with contemporary artistic movements. Throughout his career, Muhraddin experimented with various mediums, including oil and mixed media, developing a distinctive visual language that resonated with both local and international audiences.

Muhraddin’s works have been exhibited in significant institutional settings, including the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad and other regional galleries. His contributions to the development of Iraqi modernism have been recognized in surveys of Middle Eastern art, and his paintings are held in both public and private collections. At auction, Muhraddin’s works have appeared at major houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, reflecting sustained interest from collectors and affirming his status within the canon of twentieth-century Iraqi artists. His legacy endures as a testament to the vibrancy and resilience of Iraq’s artistic heritage.
