About the work

Four boldly composed Arabic calligraphic panels fill a warm cream sheet, each rendered in rich black ink with fluid, interlocking letterforms that curl and layer with confident precision. The compositions showcase a mastery of classical Arabic script styles, their dense organic forms contrasting elegantly against the aged paper ground.

Mohammad Abu Aziz

Jordan, b. 1971

Born in Amman, Jordan, in 1971, Mohammad Abu Aziz is a distinguished visual artist and calligrapher renowned for his innovative integration of Arabic calligraphy with contemporary art forms. A graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts in Amman in 1993, Abu Aziz has dedicated his career to exploring the aesthetic and cultural dimensions of the Arabic script. His work often marries traditional Islamic ornamentation and miniature art with the fluidity and geometric precision of Arabic calligraphy, creating pieces that resonate with both historical significance and modern sensibilities.

Abu Aziz's artistic journey includes notable solo exhibitions such as "Fragmentation" at the French Cultural Center in Amman (1998), "Birth" at Galerie Menara in Marrakech (2002), and "Sharing Salt" at the French Cultural Center in Jerusalem and Ramallah (2007). His collaborative project "Sharing Salt" with French photographer Jean-Luc Souffrezac was showcased at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris in 2002, highlighting his international engagement. In 2016, his exhibition "Sallam Al-Rouh" at Darat al Funun in Amman featured a blend of calligraphic works and installations, including a rope ladder symbolizing spiritual ascent.

In the art market, Abu Aziz's works have been recognized at auctions, with pieces sold at AlBahie Auction House in Qatar in 2022. His mixed media artworks on paper, executed between 2016 and 2017, were estimated between $1,200 and $2,600, reflecting a growing appreciation for his unique artistic vision. Beyond his artistic practice, Abu Aziz contributes to the cultural landscape as a member of the Jordanian Plastic Artists Association and the Jordanian Calligraphers Association, and has served as an Arabic calligraphy instructor at the Institute of Fine Arts under the Jordanian Ministry of Culture.
