Mohamed Bin Allal

Morocco, b. 1928–1995

Mohamed Ben Allal (1924–1995) was a pioneering Moroccan naïve painter born in Marrakech. A self-taught artist, he began his artistic journey alongside French painter Jacques Azéma. Ben Allal drew inspiration from the vibrant narratives of storytellers in Marrakech's Jamaa El Fna square, capturing the essence of Moroccan daily life through his art. His works are characterized by a rich chromatic palette reflecting the hues of southern Moroccan landscapes, and often depict intimate scenes of Moroccan society in its simplest form. Throughout his career, Ben Allal's paintings were showcased in numerous exhibitions, both within Morocco and internationally. Notable exhibitions include his solo show at the Venice Cadre Gallery in Casablanca in 1953, the Tangier Gallery in 1956, and the Bab Rouah Gallery in Rabat in 1964 and 1984. His works have been well-received, resonating with audiences for their candid portrayal of Moroccan culture.
