Palestine

Mohammad Al-Rakoui, born in 1950 in Gaza's Rimal neighborhood, is a Palestinian artist renowned for his evocative works that intertwine personal experience with national identity. After earning a diploma in art education, he taught art in Gaza's secondary schools. In 1973, Al-Rakoui was arrested for his involvement in resistance activities and sentenced to life imprisonment, serving 13 years in Israel's Ashkelon prison. During his incarceration, he clandestinely created numerous artworks using rudimentary materials, many of which were smuggled out and exhibited internationally. Released in a 1985 prisoner exchange, he relocated to Damascus, Syria, where he continued his artistic endeavors. Al-Rakoui's art is deeply rooted in Palestinian heritage, often depicting traditional attire, architectural motifs, and symbols like olive trees and doves. His style blends realism with abstraction, employing vibrant colors and geometric patterns to convey themes of resistance, identity, and hope. The Palestinian woman frequently appears in his work, symbolizing the resilience and strength of the nation. Throughout his career, Al-Rakoui has participated in numerous exhibitions, including a notable solo show at Damascus's Soviet Cultural Center in 1989, commemorating Palestinian Prisoners' Day. He is a member of the General Union of Palestinian Plastic Artists and has served on its administrative board in Syria. In 2023, he inaugurated the "Al-Jalil Center for Arts and Palestinian Heritage" in Damascus's Al-Zahira district, aiming to preserve and promote Palestinian culture.
