Modhir Ahmed

Iraq, b. 1956

Modhir Ahmed (مدير أحمد), born in 1956 in Iraq, is a prominent contemporary artist recognized for his innovative approach to printmaking, painting, and mixed media. After graduating from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, Ahmed continued his studies in Poland at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he specialized in graphic arts. His work is characterized by a synthesis of geometric abstraction and subtle references to his Iraqi heritage, often exploring themes of memory, displacement, and cultural identity through layered textures and refined color palettes.

Ahmed has exhibited widely in Europe and the Middle East, with notable solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as the National Museum in Warsaw, the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf) in Doha, and the Sharjah Art Museum. His works have also been featured in significant international biennials and triennials, reflecting his standing in the global art community. In addition to institutional recognition, Modhir Ahmed’s pieces have appeared at major auction houses, including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where his works have attracted collectors interested in modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art.

Currently based in Sweden, Modhir Ahmed continues to develop his artistic practice, bridging his Iraqi roots with European influences. His contributions have made him a significant figure in the dialogue between Middle Eastern and Western contemporary art, and his works are held in several public and private collections worldwide.
