Miloud Labied

Morocco, b. 1939–2008

Miloud Labied (1939–2008) was a prominent Moroccan painter recognized for his contributions to the development of modern art in Morocco. Born in Fez, Labied was largely self-taught and became known for his expressive, abstract compositions that often incorporated elements of Moroccan visual culture. His work is characterized by bold colors, dynamic brushwork, and a distinctive approach to abstraction, reflecting both personal introspection and broader cultural narratives.

Labied’s paintings have been exhibited in significant institutional settings, including the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat, which holds examples of his work in its permanent collection. He participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout Morocco and internationally, helping to shape the post-independence Moroccan art scene. His artistic legacy is closely associated with the Casablanca School, a movement that sought to blend local traditions with modernist experimentation.

On the secondary market, Miloud Labied’s works have appeared at major auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where his paintings have attracted the attention of collectors interested in North African modernism. His enduring influence is evident in the continued appreciation of his work both within Morocco and abroad, marking him as a key figure in the history of 20th-century Moroccan art.
