Egypt

Mervat Shazly Helaly, born on January 19, 1969, in Aswan, Egypt, is a distinguished painter whose work vividly captures the essence of Southern Egypt and its people. Her art, deeply rooted in her Nubian heritage, blends modern techniques with traditional themes, often focusing on the emotions and experiences of women. Through her expressionistic style, she employs symbols like birds, cats, and fish to narrate stories of community, nature, and the complexities of urban life.

Helaly earned her Bachelor of Arts in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1992, followed by a Master's degree in 1998, and a Doctorate in 2009, with her research focusing on contemporary Egyptian art. Over her three-decade career, she has exhibited extensively both in Egypt and internationally. Notable exhibitions include her solo show "From South Inspiration" at Manmaq Gallery in 1998 and "Light in the Old Cairo" at Cairo Atelier in 2000. Her works are part of significant collections, such as the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art. In 2017, she received an award at the Sheikha Suad Al-Sabah Biennale in Kuwait.

Beyond her artistic endeavors, Helaly has contributed significantly to Egypt's cultural scene. She has held positions at the Egyptian Opera House and served as the director of the Waheed El-Din Selim Museum. Her paintings, rich in texture and symbolism, serve as a testament to her commitment to preserving and reimagining Egypt's cultural identity.
