Montenegro

Marina Abramović, born in 1946 in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia (now Serbia), is a pioneering performance artist whose work has profoundly influenced contemporary art. Although sometimes associated with Montenegro due to her family heritage, Abramović is most widely recognized as Serbian. Her practice spans performance, video, installation, and photography, often exploring themes of physical endurance, pain, and the limits of the body and mind. She is renowned for her groundbreaking performances, such as "Rhythm 0" (1974) and "The Artist Is Present" (2010), the latter held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, where she sat silently across from visitors for over 700 hours.

Abramović’s work has been exhibited in major institutions worldwide, including solo exhibitions at MoMA, the Serpentine Gallery in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. She has also participated in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale and Documenta in Kassel. Her pieces have achieved significant results at major auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, with photographs and documentation of her performances commanding strong prices, reflecting her status as a seminal figure in performance art. Abramović continues to influence new generations of artists through her foundation and teaching, solidifying her legacy as a transformative force in the art world.
