Mahmoud Mussa

Egypt, b. 1913–2003

Mahmoud Moussa (1913–2003) was a prominent Egyptian sculptor whose work bridged ancient traditions and modern aesthetics. Born in Alexandria, he began his artistic journey at 13, studying under the guidance of Mahmoud Said and Mahmoud Mokhtar. Moussa's sculptures, often crafted from granite, marble, and terracotta, are renowned for their dynamic representations of the working class and animals, reflecting a deep connection to Egypt's rich artistic heritage.

Throughout his career, Moussa participated in numerous exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Egyptian Academy in Rome in 1987 and a joint exhibition with Esmat Dawestashy at the Soviet Cultural Center in Alexandria in 1974. His works are held in esteemed collections such as the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art in Cairo, the Alexandria Museum of Fine Arts, and the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha. Notably, his sculpture "The Worker" achieved a record price of $270,285 at Bonhams in 2015, underscoring his significant impact on the art market.
