Mahdi Qotbi

Morocco, b. 1951

Mahdi Qotbi (مهدي قطبي), born in 1951 in Morocco, is a prominent contemporary artist recognized for his distinctive approach to calligraphic abstraction. Qotbi’s work is characterized by the fusion of traditional Arabic calligraphy with modernist aesthetics, often employing vibrant colors and intricate geometric patterns. His paintings and mixed-media works explore the expressive potential of script, transforming letters into dynamic visual compositions that transcend linguistic boundaries.

Qotbi has exhibited extensively in major institutions both in Morocco and internationally. Notably, his works have been shown at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat, underscoring his significance in the contemporary art scene. In addition to his artistic practice, Qotbi is known for his cultural advocacy, serving as the president of the National Foundation of Museums of Morocco, where he has played a pivotal role in promoting Moroccan art and heritage.

At auction, Mahdi Qotbi’s works have appeared at reputable houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, reflecting his standing in the international art market. His paintings have attracted collectors interested in modern and contemporary North African art, with sales highlighting the growing appreciation for his innovative synthesis of calligraphy and abstraction. Qotbi continues to live and work in Morocco, contributing to both the artistic and cultural landscapes of his country.
