Madiha Omar

Iraq, b. 1908–2005

Madiha Omar (1908–2005) was a pioneering Iraqi artist, widely recognized as one of the earliest figures to explore the integration of Arabic calligraphy within modern abstract art. Born in Aleppo to Iraqi parents and later active in Baghdad, Omar’s work is characterized by her innovative use of Arabic script as a visual element, blending traditional calligraphic forms with modernist abstraction. Her experimentation with calligraphy began in the 1940s, preceding the formal Hurufiyya movement, and she is often credited as a foundational influence on subsequent generations of Arab artists.

Omar’s career included significant institutional recognition. She held solo exhibitions at the Al-Wasiti Gallery in Baghdad and participated in group shows at the Baghdad Museum of Modern Art. Internationally, her work was featured in the 1952 exhibition “Arabic Calligraphy” at the Georgetown Public Library in Washington, D.C., and she was included in the groundbreaking 1989 exhibition “Forces of Change: Artists of the Arab World” at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. Her paintings are held in the collections of the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha and the Barjeel Art Foundation.

At auction, Madiha Omar’s works have appeared at major houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, reflecting her enduring significance in the Middle Eastern art market. Notably, her paintings have been included in Christie’s Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish Art sales, underscoring her status as a key figure in the development of modern art in Iraq and the broader Arab world.
