Khudair Al-Shakarji

Iraq, b. 1937–2005

Khudair Al-Shakarji (خضير الشكرجي), born in Iraq in 1937 and passing in 2005, was a prominent Iraqi artist recognized for his contributions to modern Iraqi art. Al-Shakarji’s work is noted for its engagement with both traditional Iraqi themes and contemporary artistic movements, often blending figurative elements with expressive abstraction. His practice encompassed painting and drawing, with a particular focus on capturing the cultural and social narratives of Iraq through vibrant color palettes and dynamic compositions.

Throughout his career, Al-Shakarji participated in several significant exhibitions within Iraq, including shows at the Iraqi Artists Association and other major cultural institutions in Baghdad. His works have been featured in group exhibitions that highlighted the evolution of Iraqi modernism, and he was regarded as an influential figure among his contemporaries. While his art has appeared in regional auctions, there is no verified record of sales at major international auction houses such as Christie’s, Sotheby’s, or Bonhams. Nevertheless, his legacy endures in the collections of Iraqi art institutions and among collectors of Middle Eastern modern art, reflecting his lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Iraq.
