Iraq

Born in Mosul in 1954, Iraqi artist Khalif Mahmoud is renowned for his vibrant watercolor paintings that intricately depict the daily lives, traditions, and cultural heritage of his homeland. His works often blend hyper-realistic portrayals of rural and urban scenes, capturing the essence of Iraqi society with meticulous attention to detail.

Mahmoud earned his Bachelor's degree in 1976 from the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad, followed by a Master's in 2004 and a Ph.D. in 2010 from the University of Damascus, both in graphic design. He has held numerous solo exhibitions across Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates. Notably, his 22nd solo exhibition, "Eclats de Vie" ("Shards of Life"), was showcased at the Institut Français d'Irak in Baghdad in June 2023. Mahmoud has also participated in international group exhibitions, including the "Artist and Book" exhibition in Amman in 2012.

Throughout his career, Mahmoud has received several accolades, such as the first prize at the National Spring Festival in 1984 and the third prize from the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1999. He has been instrumental in fostering the Iraqi art scene, founding the Ninawa Group for Modern Art in 2004 and the Watercolor Painters Group in 2009. Additionally, he has served as the president of the Iraqi Plastic Artists Association in Nineveh.
