Khaled Al Rahal

Iraq, b. 1926–1987

Khaled Al Rahal (خالد الرحال, 1926–1987) was a prominent Iraqi sculptor and painter, widely recognized as a leading figure in the development of modern art in Iraq. Born in Baghdad, Al Rahal was instrumental in shaping the country’s post-war artistic landscape, blending traditional Mesopotamian motifs with modernist aesthetics. He worked primarily in sculpture, utilizing bronze and stone, but was also accomplished in painting. His style is characterized by a synthesis of abstraction and figurative elements, often drawing inspiration from Iraq’s rich cultural heritage.

Al Rahal’s works have been exhibited at major institutions, including the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad, where several of his sculptures remain part of the permanent collection. He was a founding member of the Baghdad Modern Art Group, which played a pivotal role in the evolution of contemporary art in Iraq. Internationally, his pieces have appeared in significant exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale, representing Iraqi modernism on the global stage.

At auction, Khaled Al Rahal’s works have been featured at leading houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, achieving notable results that underscore his enduring legacy and the growing interest in Iraqi modern art. His sculptures, in particular, are highly sought after by collectors and institutions, reflecting both their historical significance and artistic innovation.
