Iraq, b. 1932–1985

Kathem Haidar (1932–1985) was a prominent Iraqi artist known for his innovative contributions to modern Iraqi art. Born in Baghdad, Haidar was deeply influenced by the cultural and political landscape of Iraq, which shaped his artistic vision. He worked across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and printmaking, often exploring themes of identity, heritage, and the human condition. His style is noted for its expressive use of form and symbolism, blending elements of Iraqi folklore with modernist sensibilities.

Haidar’s work was widely exhibited in Iraq and internationally. He participated in significant group and solo exhibitions, including shows at the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad, which holds several of his works in its permanent collection. His art was also featured in major regional exhibitions that highlighted the evolution of modern art in the Arab world. Haidar’s influence extended to his role as an educator, mentoring a generation of Iraqi artists and contributing to the development of the country’s artistic institutions.
