Joze Ciuha

Slovenia

Jože Ciuha (1924–2015) was a prominent Slovenian painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, recognized for his distinctive visual language that blended elements of modernism with motifs inspired by his extensive travels. Born in Trbovlje, Slovenia, Ciuha graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 1950. His artistic practice encompassed painting, drawing, illustration, and mural work, often characterized by vibrant colors, calligraphic lines, and symbolic figures. Ciuha’s style evolved through influences from Byzantine art, Eastern philosophies, and his experiences in Paris, Macedonia, and the Far East, resulting in a unique synthesis of Western and Eastern artistic traditions.

Ciuha’s works have been exhibited in major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana and the International Centre of Graphic Arts. He participated in significant international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Art Biennial, establishing his reputation beyond Slovenia. On the secondary market, his works have appeared at reputable auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s, with notable sales reflecting sustained collector interest in his paintings and works on paper. Jože Ciuha remains a central figure in 20th-century Slovenian art, celebrated for his innovative approach and cross-cultural explorations.
