Czech Republic

Jiri Georg Dokoupil (born 1954, Krnov, former Czechoslovakia) is a prominent contemporary artist known for his experimental approach to painting and his refusal to adhere to a single style or medium. After emigrating to Germany in 1968, Dokoupil became a founding member of the influential Mülheimer Freiheit group in Cologne in the early 1980s, which played a pivotal role in the development of Neo-Expressionism. His oeuvre is characterized by a wide-ranging exploration of techniques, including unconventional materials such as soot, soap bubbles, and rubber, resulting in visually diverse bodies of work that challenge traditional notions of painting.

Dokoupil’s work has been exhibited in major institutions worldwide, including solo shows at the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK) in Vienna, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He has also participated in significant group exhibitions such as Documenta 7 in Kassel and the Venice Biennale. His paintings have achieved notable results at leading auction houses, with works sold at Sotheby’s and Christie’s, reflecting his strong presence in the international art market. Dokoupil continues to live and work between Berlin, Madrid, Prague, and Rio de Janeiro, maintaining a dynamic and influential career.
