Jamil Hamoudi

Iraq

Jamil Hamoudi (1924–2003) was a pioneering Iraqi artist known for his significant contributions to modern art in Iraq. Born in Baghdad, Hamoudi was a multifaceted artist, working across painting, sculpture, and graphic design. He is particularly recognized for his innovative integration of Arabic calligraphy and geometric abstraction, which positioned him as a leading figure in the Hurufiyya movement—a group of artists who explored the aesthetic potential of Arabic script within contemporary art. His work often reflected a synthesis of traditional Iraqi motifs and modernist sensibilities, contributing to the evolution of visual culture in the region.

Hamoudi’s art has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad, and he participated in several international exhibitions that showcased Iraqi modernism on a global stage. His works have also appeared at reputable auction houses such as Christie’s, where they have attracted attention from collectors interested in Middle Eastern modern art. Throughout his career, Hamoudi played a vital role in shaping the discourse of Iraqi art, both as an artist and as an educator, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to influence contemporary artists in Iraq and beyond.
