About the work

A young woman sits quietly on a dark wooden surface, her gaze cast downward toward scattered floral forms and small red fruits, rendered in deep earthy browns and muted greys with delicate accents of red. The arched board and richly textured brushwork lend the scene a brooding, introspective atmosphere.

Ismail Nassra

Syria, b. 1964

Ismail Nasra, born in 1964 in Salamiyah, Syria, is a distinguished painter known for his evocative depictions of the human form, particularly focusing on female figures. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus in 1987 and earned a postgraduate diploma in 1998. Nasra's work is characterized by a blend of realism and abstraction, often employing a rich palette and diverse materials, including wood and metal, to convey depth and emotion.

Throughout his career, Nasra has held numerous solo exhibitions, notably at Ishtar Gallery in 2000, 2003, and 2007, and at Free Hand Gallery in Damascus in 2009. His participation in group exhibitions spans internationally, including the Cairo International Biennale in 2001 and the Contemporary Art Exhibition in Istanbul in 2009. His works are part of the Syrian Ministry of Culture's collection and various private collections.

In addition to his artistic practice, Nasra contributed to art education by teaching at the Adham Ismail Center from 2004 to 2015. His dedication to exploring the human condition through art has solidified his reputation within the Syrian art scene and beyond.
