Ismail Al Chekhli

Iraq, b. 1924–2002

Ismail Al Chekhli (إسماعيل الشيخلي), born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1924 and passing in 2002, was a prominent figure in the development of modern Iraqi art. Renowned for his contributions as both a painter and educator, Al Chekhli’s work is characterized by a synthesis of traditional Iraqi themes with modernist techniques, often exploring abstraction and expressive color palettes. His artistic practice spanned oil painting and drawing, with a focus on capturing the cultural and social landscapes of Iraq.

Al Chekhli was a founding member of the Baghdad Modern Art Group, a collective pivotal in shaping Iraq’s post-war art scene. His works have been exhibited in significant institutional venues, including the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art and various national exhibitions throughout Baghdad during the mid-20th century. Internationally, his paintings have appeared in group shows highlighting Iraqi modernism, contributing to the recognition of Iraqi artists on the global stage.

At auction, Ismail Al Chekhli’s works have been featured at major houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, reflecting sustained collector interest. Notably, his paintings have achieved strong results in sales of modern Arab art, underscoring his status as a key figure in Iraq’s artistic heritage. His legacy endures through both his artistic output and his influence on generations of Iraqi artists.
