Hussam Salem

Jordan, b. 1995

Hussam Salem is a Palestinian photojournalist renowned for his compelling documentation of life in Gaza. Born in 1988, Salem began his journey in photography during his computer engineering studies in 2008, initially capturing natural landscapes as a hobby. His passion soon evolved into a professional career, leading him to work with local media outlets from 2009 onwards.

Salem's work gained international recognition during the 2014 Israeli offensive on Gaza. One of his most impactful images captures a grieving father tearing his shirt while mourning his four children killed in the "Gaza Beach Massacre." This poignant photograph was selected by the BBC as one of the most powerful images of 2014, resonating globally and highlighting the human cost of the conflict. In 2017, Salem's photograph of young men practicing street workouts atop a bombed-out building in Gaza earned him the Best Picture award in the Anadolu Agency's competition, making him the sole Arab winner that year.

Despite his acclaim, Salem faced numerous challenges due to travel restrictions imposed on Gaza residents. Over 30 attempts to travel abroad for exhibitions and award ceremonies were thwarted by the closure of the Rafah border crossing. These obstacles underscore the broader difficulties faced by Palestinian journalists and artists in gaining international exposure. Salem's work continues to shed light on the resilience and daily struggles of Gazans, offering a human perspective on life under siege.
