Hussein Amin Bicar (1913–2002) was a seminal Egyptian artist whose multifaceted career encompassed painting, illustration, journalism, and music. Born in Alexandria, he graduated from the Higher School of Fine Arts in Cairo in 1933. Bicar's artistic oeuvre is distinguished by its simplicity and clarity, often reflecting Pharaonic influences characterized by harmony and mysticism. His work spans various mediums, including oil paintings and illustrations, with a particular emphasis on portraiture and depictions of Egyptian rural life and Nubian culture.

In addition to his visual art, Bicar was a pioneer in elevating journalistic illustration to an art form, contributing significantly to Egyptian newspapers such as Akhbar El Yom. He also played a crucial role in children's literature, being the first Egyptian artist to illustrate Arabic children's books and founding the children's magazine "Al-Sindbad" in 1952. His dedication to art education led him to teach in Morocco and later at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, where he eventually chaired the painting department.

Throughout his career, Bicar received numerous accolades, including the State Merit Award in 1978 and the Mubarak Award in 2000. His works have been exhibited both locally and internationally, with notable participation in the Alexandria Biennale and the Venice Biennale. Bicar's legacy endures through his contributions to modern Egyptian art and his influence on subsequent generations of artists.
