Himat Ali

Iraq

Himat Ali (حيمت علي), born in 1960 in Iraq, is a contemporary Iraqi artist recognized for his vibrant paintings and mixed media works that often explore themes of memory, displacement, and cultural identity. Ali’s artistic practice is deeply influenced by his experiences as an Iraqi living in exile, and his compositions frequently incorporate abstracted forms, calligraphic elements, and layered textures that evoke both personal and collective histories.

Ali has exhibited widely in the Middle East and internationally, with notable institutional exhibitions including shows at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the British Museum in London, where his works have contributed to surveys of modern and contemporary Iraqi art. His pieces have also been featured in group exhibitions focusing on the broader context of Middle Eastern art, highlighting his role in the post-1970s Iraqi art movement.

On the secondary market, Himat Ali’s works have appeared at major auction houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, particularly in sales dedicated to Modern and Contemporary Arab and Iranian Art. His paintings have achieved strong results, reflecting growing interest in Iraqi artists of his generation. Ali continues to live and work in Europe, maintaining a significant presence in both the Iraqi and international art scenes.
