Helgi T.Fridjonsson

Iceland

Helgi Þorgils Friðjónsson, born on March 7, 1953, in Búðardalur, Iceland, is a prominent visual artist known for his distinctive blend of surrealism and naivety. His works often explore themes of solitude and humanity's relationship with nature, frequently incorporating motifs from Icelandic folklore, such as centaurs and angels. Friðjónsson's artistic repertoire spans oil paintings, drawings, graphics, sculptures, and text-based works.

After completing his studies at the Icelandic College of Art and Craft in 1976, Friðjónsson pursued further education at De Vrije Academie in The Hague and the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, Netherlands. Since 1974, he has exhibited extensively across Europe and the United States. Notable exhibitions include the Biennale de Paris in 1980, the Venice Biennale in 1990, and "Confronting Nature" at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 2002. In 1980, he founded "The Corridor," a small exhibition space in Reykjavík aimed at introducing international contemporary art to the Icelandic scene.

In the art market, Friðjónsson's works have achieved significant recognition. His piece "Iceland Fishes" (2000–2001) set a record price of $17,489 at auction in 2023. His contributions to art have been acknowledged through numerous exhibitions and his active role in fostering the Icelandic art community.
