Hasan Alsharq

Egypt, b. 1949–2022

Hasan Alsharq (حسن الشرق, also transliterated as Hassan El Sharq), born in 1949 in Egypt and passing in 2022, was a prominent Egyptian painter celebrated for his vivid depictions of rural Egyptian life. His work is characterized by a distinctive naïve style, employing bold colors and simplified forms to capture the spirit and traditions of the Egyptian countryside. Alsharq’s paintings often feature scenes of daily life, folklore, and local customs, reflecting his deep connection to his birthplace in the Minya region.

Alsharq’s art has been exhibited in several notable institutions, including the Museum of Egyptian Modern Art in Cairo, which holds examples of his work in its permanent collection. He also participated in international exhibitions, such as those in Germany and France, further establishing his reputation beyond Egypt. His unique visual language and dedication to Egyptian heritage have made his paintings highly recognizable and sought after.

In the secondary market, Hasan Alsharq’s works have appeared at major auction houses, including Christie’s, where his paintings have attracted collectors interested in modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art. His legacy endures through both institutional recognition and continued demand among collectors, marking him as a significant figure in 20th and 21st-century Egyptian art.
