Hans Hartung

Germany, b. 1904–1989

Hans Hartung (1904–1989) was a pioneering German-born artist renowned for his influential role in the development of European abstract art in the 20th century. Emigrating to France in the 1930s, Hartung became closely associated with the Art Informel and Lyrical Abstraction movements, distinguished by his dynamic brushwork, gestural mark-making, and innovative use of tools such as spray guns and rollers. His work is characterized by energetic, spontaneous lines and a profound exploration of the expressive potential of abstraction, often rendered in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas or paper.

Hartung’s art has been celebrated in major institutional exhibitions, including retrospectives at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Centre Pompidou, as well as significant presentations at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. His paintings are held in the permanent collections of leading museums worldwide. In the auction market, Hartung’s works have achieved notable results at Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Bonhams, with several paintings surpassing the million-dollar mark, underscoring his enduring appeal among collectors. Hartung’s legacy is marked by his relentless experimentation and his profound impact on the trajectory of postwar abstraction.
