Hammoud Chantout

Syria, b. 1956

Hammoud Chantout (حمود شنتوت), born in 1956 in Syria, is a prominent contemporary Syrian painter known for his evocative, atmospheric compositions that blend elements of memory, nostalgia, and the everyday. Working primarily in oil on canvas, Chantout’s style is characterized by a poetic use of color and light, often depicting interiors, still lifes, and architectural motifs that evoke a sense of longing and introspection. His works are celebrated for their subtle textures and the interplay between abstraction and figuration, reflecting both personal and collective histories.

Chantout studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus and later continued his artistic education in Paris, which further influenced his approach to painting. He has exhibited widely in the Middle East and Europe, with notable institutional exhibitions including solo shows at Ayyam Gallery in Dubai and Beirut, as well as participation in group exhibitions at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. His paintings have been featured in major auctions at Christie’s and Bonhams, achieving strong results and affirming his status within the regional and international art markets. Chantout’s work is held in several private and public collections, underscoring his significance as a leading figure in modern Syrian art.
