About the work

Haitham Azizah

Iraq

Haitham Fathallah Azizah, born in Mosul in 1955, is an Iraqi photographer and publisher renowned for his documentary photography and contributions to Iraqi visual culture. Raised in a family with a rich history in printing since 1918, Azizah developed an early affinity for visual arts. He earned a degree in physics from the University of Baghdad but pursued a career in photography, beginning in the 1970s. Azizah served as a sports photographer for over a decade, accompanying the Iraqi national team to various international tournaments. In 1986, he received the silver award for a collection of color photographs from the International Organization of Journalists.

In 1992, Azizah published a book on photojournalism, chronicling the journey of press photography with a keen eye for detail. He has delivered lectures on "Press Photography and the Duties of the Photojournalist." Azizah has held five solo exhibitions in Baghdad and Amman, including the 2015 exhibition "No to War" at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, commemorating the centenary of World War I. This exhibition, inaugurated by Princess Reem Ali, featured a curated selection of war photographs with concise annotations in Arabic, English, and French.

Beyond photography, Azizah is the founder of Dar Al-Adeeb Al-Baghdadiya, a publishing house dedicated to documenting and archiving the works of numerous Iraqi intellectuals and artists. Since 2002, this initiative has aimed to serve as a cultural resource for future generations. Azizah is also working on a comprehensive visual encyclopedia of Iraqi football, reflecting his enduring passion for sports photography.
