Goh Ee Choo

Singapore

Goh Ee Choo, born on December 12, 1962, in Singapore, is a distinguished contemporary artist known for his multidisciplinary approach, encompassing painting, installation, and conceptual art. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1985, he furthered his studies at London's Slade School of Fine Art, earning a Master of Fine Arts in 1990. Goh's work often delves into themes of spirituality, power structures, and human consciousness, reflecting his deep engagement with Taoist and Buddhist philosophies.

Goh's artistic journey gained significant momentum with the 1988 collaborative exhibition "Trimurti" at the Goethe-Institut in Singapore, alongside artists S. Chandrasekaran and Salleh Japar. This groundbreaking show marked a pivotal moment in Singapore's contemporary art scene by integrating cultural and religious iconography into modern art practices. His solo exhibition "Power Structure" in 1991 further explored societal hierarchies and the dynamics of power. Internationally, Goh represented Singapore at the Sixth Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh in 1993, where he received an Honourable Mention.

In the art market, Goh's works have been recognized for their value. Notably, his piece "Compassion 'Om Mani Padme Hum'" fetched USD 2,715 at a 33 Auction Singapore event in 2017. Beyond his artistic practice, Goh has contributed to art education, teaching at institutions such as the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and LASALLE College of the Arts, nurturing the next generation of artists in Singapore.
