Ghassan Mafadleh

Jordan, b. 1964

Ghassan Mafadleh, born in 1964, is a Jordanian artist and art critic renowned for his sculptural installations and public artworks that explore the interplay between humanity and the environment. His work often incorporates materials such as metal sheets and rods, reflecting a deep engagement with the natural and historical landscapes of Jordan.

Mafadleh has exhibited extensively, with notable solo exhibitions including "Statues of Ain Ghazal: Radiation from the Womb of History" at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in 2019, where he reinterpreted ancient Neolithic statues through contemporary sculptural forms. In 2024, his exhibition "Trace upon Trace" showcased 25 large-scale artworks that blended sculptural installations with two-dimensional wall pieces, emphasizing the transformation of material traces into spaces open to sensory and imaginative interpretation.

His public art projects are prominent across Jordanian cities. The "Human and Place" series features sculptures at the entrances of cities like Ajloun and Tafileh, inspired by local heritage and natural surroundings. In Amman, his mural "Moon of Amman" adorns the walls of the Third Circle tunnel, symbolizing the city's mountainous terrain. Beyond his artistic practice, Mafadleh contributes to art criticism and has authored "Khaza'in al-Mar'i: A Critical View of Contemporary Arab Art," reflecting his commitment to the discourse on Arab art.
