Gerees Saad

Syria, b. 1934–2009

Jiris Hanna Saad (1934–2009) was a prominent Syrian painter known for his realistic and expressive style. Born in Qatana, Syria, he graduated from the first class of the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1960. Throughout his career, Saad depicted scenes of old architecture, nature, flowers, and human figures, blending realism with spontaneous touches that conveyed warmth and emotion. His unique approach to color and texture gave his works a distinctive tactile quality.

Saad participated in numerous official group exhibitions both domestically and internationally. One of his most significant contributions is a large mosaic mural measuring 14 by 6 meters, created in collaboration with artists Ali Al-Sarmani and Aziz Ismail. This mural adorns the facade of the General Union of Farmers building in Damascus, portraying a panoramic view of farmers' lives and their deep connection to the land and nation. Additionally, Saad dedicated part of his life to art education, teaching art in Damascus high schools and at the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Saad passed away on January 14, 2009, at the age of 75. His legacy endures through his contributions to Syrian art and his influence on subsequent generations of artists.
