Fuad Al-Futaih

Yemen, b. 1948–2018

Fuad Al-Futaih (فؤاد الفتيح, also transliterated as Fuad Al-Futaihi) was a pioneering Yemeni artist, born in 1948 and active until his passing in 2018. Recognized as one of Yemen’s most influential modern painters, Al-Futaih worked primarily in painting and drawing, developing a distinctive style that combined elements of abstraction with motifs drawn from Yemeni heritage and daily life. His works often explored themes of identity, tradition, and the rapidly changing social landscape of Yemen, employing bold colors and expressive forms.

Al-Futaih’s art has been exhibited in prominent institutions both within Yemen and internationally. Notably, his works have been shown at the National Museum in Sana’a and featured in group exhibitions representing Yemeni art abroad, including at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. His contributions have been instrumental in shaping the modern art movement in Yemen, and he is celebrated for fostering a new generation of Yemeni artists.

In the secondary market, Fuad Al-Futaih’s works have appeared at reputable auction houses, including Bonhams, where his paintings have attracted attention from collectors interested in Middle Eastern modernism. His legacy endures as a central figure in Yemeni art history, bridging local traditions with contemporary artistic expression.
