Fatna Gbouri

Morocco, b. 1924–2012

Fatna Gbouri (1924–2012) was a Moroccan self-taught artist renowned for her vibrant depictions of rural life. Born in Tnine El Gharbia, Safi Province, she began her artistic journey at 59, encouraged by her son, painter Ahmed Mjidaoui. Her works, characterized by vivid colors and intricate details, capture everyday scenes such as weddings, births, and local ceremonies, reflecting the simplicity and innocence of traditional Moroccan life.

Gbouri's artistic career commenced with a group exhibition in Meknes in 1986, followed by her solo debut in Rabat in 1989. Over the years, she exhibited extensively across Morocco and internationally, including in France, Germany, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates. Notably, her painting "La Cérémonie du Henné" (1994) achieved a significant auction result of €51,000 in December 2022. In 2025, the Villa des Arts in Casablanca hosted a retrospective titled "Fatna Gbouri: Entre tradition et modernité," highlighting her major works from 1982 to 1990.

Gbouri's legacy endures through her authentic portrayals of Moroccan culture, offering a window into the country's rich traditions and daily life.
