Fateh AlMoudarres

Syria, b. 1922–1999

Fateh AlMoudarres (1922–1999) was a pioneering Syrian painter and one of the most influential figures in modern Arab art. Born in Aleppo, Syria, AlMoudarres is celebrated for his distinctive approach that fused elements of Surrealism and Symbolism with motifs drawn from Syrian folklore, religious iconography, and ancient civilizations. His work spans painting, drawing, and printmaking, often characterized by dreamlike compositions, expressive figures, and a nuanced use of color and texture. AlMoudarres’s artistic evolution reflected both his academic training at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome and his deep engagement with the cultural and political realities of the Arab world.

AlMoudarres’s works have been exhibited extensively in major institutions, including the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah, underscoring his enduring legacy in the region’s art history. His paintings are held in the collections of the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha and the Syrian National Museum in Damascus. On the international auction stage, AlMoudarres has achieved significant milestones, with his works regularly featured in sales at Christie’s and Sotheby’s, where they have fetched record prices for Syrian modernists. His contributions have cemented his reputation as a central figure in the development of 20th-century Middle Eastern art.
