Farouk Hosny

Egypt, b. 1938

Farouk Hosny (فاروق حسني), born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1938, is a prominent Egyptian painter renowned for his abstract compositions and expressive use of color. Initially trained at Alexandria University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, Hosny’s early works reflected a fascination with the Mediterranean landscape, but he later developed a distinctive abstract style characterized by sweeping gestures and a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. His oeuvre spans painting, sculpture, and mixed media, often exploring themes of memory, nature, and the subconscious.

Hosny’s works have been exhibited in major institutions both within Egypt and internationally, including the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and the Venice Biennale. He served as Egypt’s Minister of Culture from 1987 to 2011, a tenure that further elevated his profile in the global art scene. His paintings are held in the collections of the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art in Cairo and have been featured in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

At auction, Farouk Hosny’s works have achieved notable results at leading houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, with several paintings surpassing their high estimates and attracting collectors from the Middle East and beyond. His enduring influence on contemporary Arab art is reflected in both his artistic practice and his cultural leadership, securing his legacy as one of Egypt’s most significant modern artists.
