Farghali AbdelHafiz

Egypt, b. 1941–2023

Farghali AbdelHafiz (فرغلي عبد الحفيظ, also transliterated as Farghali Abdel Hafiz or Farghaly Abdel Hafiz) was a prominent Egyptian painter born in 1941 and passed away in 2023. Renowned for his vibrant compositions and innovative use of color, AbdelHafiz’s work often explored themes rooted in Egyptian heritage, folklore, and daily life. He worked primarily in painting, employing mixed media and collage techniques that contributed to a distinctive visual language, blending abstraction with figurative elements. His style is characterized by expressive brushwork and a rich palette, reflecting both modernist influences and deep connections to local traditions.

AbdelHafiz’s art has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art in Cairo, where he held several solo and group exhibitions. He represented Egypt in numerous international biennials, such as the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennial, underscoring his significance in both national and global art scenes. His works have also appeared at reputable auction houses, including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where they have attracted collectors interested in modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art.
