Fadwa Ramadan

Egypt, b. 1972

Fadwa Ramadan, born on March 19, 1972, in Gharbia, Egypt, is a multifaceted artist whose work seamlessly integrates visual art with linguistic elements. After earning a degree from the Faculty of Commerce at Helwan University in 1999, she pursued studies in art history in Italy. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Ramadan has been an active art critic and journalist since 1999, contributing to various local and Arab publications. Ramadan's artistic practice is distinguished by her innovative use of the Amazigh script, which she encountered during a 2014 visit to Egypt's Siwa Oasis. Initially drawn to the script's aesthetic qualities, she began incorporating its characters into her monochromatic compositions, evolving over time to infuse her works with Amazigh words and poetry. This exploration culminated in her 2023 solo exhibition, "Beyond Languages II," at Art Concept in Manama, Bahrain. Throughout her career, Ramadan has held multiple solo exhibitions, including shows at Cairo Atelier between 1998 and 2003, and at Lot 17 Gallery in 2010. Her works are part of collections at the Egypt Modern Art Museum, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the Canadian Embassy in Egypt. In recognition of her contributions to art and criticism, she received the State Prize for Art Creation and Criticism in 2003 and 2004.
